Google Business Profile: a guide to getting found on the map

Aggelos Kourtidis1 min read

Your Google Maps profile is often the first thing a customer sees. Step by step: category, photos, reviews and posts that lift a local business.

When someone searches for “bakery Corinth” or “hairdresser near me”, Google first shows a map with three businesses and only then the websites. Those three spots come from Google Business Profile, and for a local business they often matter more than the first organic result.

The first step is the right primary category. Pick the most specific one that describes you, for example “Bakery” rather than “Food store”, and add secondary categories only if you really offer them. Fill in opening hours, phone, website and service areas, and keep your name, phone and address identical everywhere: on your site, on Facebook and in directories.

Photos make the difference. Upload your space, products, team and work, and keep adding new ones every week. A profile that stays active tells Google and customers that the business is alive.

Reviews are the strongest signal. Ask every happy customer for a review with a direct link, and reply to all of them, positive and negative, politely and in the name of the business. Do not buy reviews: Google detects them and can suspend the profile.

Use the profile's services and products sections with prices, and publish one post a month for offers, news or events. Finally, make sure your website is fast and clearly says where you work, because Google checks that the profile and the site tell the same story.

If you do not have time to set it up, I do it in the Google Business Profile package: categories, copy, photos, services and a ready review link, so you start showing up on the map in your area.
